How to Protect Your Home from Burglary

While technologies continue to improve and new solutions come out every year to safeguard our family and assets, significant amount of burglary still occurs. According to FBI uniform crime reporting statistics, although there has been decline in theft and burglary in the recent years, there are still millions of homes being broken into, resulting in aggregated losses valued at over $3 billion.

Contrary to popular belief, thieves love to break into properties where there are no security systems installed. And less than a quarter of homes have a security system installed. A typical burglary is done with forcible entry such as prying open doors, breaking windows or lock picking.

To protect yourselves from becoming a victim of burglary, there are several options you can undertake: 

• Install switch timer to turn on light in the households at night.
• Be on good terms with your neighbors. There’s nothing better than someone close by to look after your house while you are away.
• If you are on holiday, arrange to suspend your mail delivery service or have your neighbors handle it for you.
• Avoid placing valuable where it can be easily seen from the front entrance, rear entrance and windows. Keep your valuables hidden and locked up.
• Regularly tend to your garden and remove any structure that may provide a good cover for burglars to observe from.
• Install reinforced doors and windows to prevent forcible entry.
• Choose a reliable videophone to see/communicate with individuals outside.
• Install a reliable home security alarm system to detect, monitor and report possible break-ins.
