Seniors are at a great risk for falls due to medication and health deterioration. While falling does not pose a serious risk for most healthy adults, simple falls for elderly can cause bone fractures and other injuries, as well as affecting mental wellbeing. To prevent these misfortunes from happening, most of the residents in nursing homes in the 90s were restrained. However, thanks to innovation of monitoring alarms, that number has dropped to 1% in 2011.
Below we list some of the common fall monitoring alarms and accessories that can be readily deployed for senior care and fall prevention.
Bed Exit /Fall Management Alarm Monitor
The continuous alarm monitor is the hub for detecting bed exit and prevents fall. It is available in wired & wireless versions. It can be connected with pressure sensing bed/chair pads or floor mats and placed under the at-risk individuals. The device can be connected with existing nurse call system via wire cable.
Bed Sensor Pad
These are pressure-sensitive pads that are placed underneath the bedsheet to detect presence of patient or elderly on the bed. The pads are typically waterproof construction to protect against liquids such as drinks or urine. If the pad does not sense any pressure, signals will be sent to the alarm monitor for actions such as notifying nurses or triggering audible alarm. It is available in wired & wireless version.
Chair Sensor Pad
Like its bed sensor counterparts, these are pressure-sensitive pads that are placed on the wheelchair to detect presence of patient or elderly away from the wheelchair. The pads are typically waterproof construction to protect against liquids such as drinks or urine. If the pad does not sense any pressure, it will relay messages to the alarm hub to alert caregivers or triggering audible warning. It is available in wired & wireless version.
Anti Wandering Alarm
This is a set of alarm that has transmitter and receiver. The pendant or watch on the wearer acts as a transmitter of signals, whereas the receiver is placed near the door exit to detect if the person has wandered too close. One of the downside is that the wearer may voluntary take off tracking device to avoid alert.
Nurse Call Button System
While above alarm solutions are passive and alerts the caregiver automatically, there are times when the senior or patient may want to contact the caregiver remotely. A call button system can be placed beside the bed, washroom or entrance for easy access. Or it can be worn as a necklace pendant or wristband to use as mobile safety device. Once the button is pressed for assistance, signals are sent to the nurse station to respond to the call. It is beneficial for patients who are confined to bed or may be hazardous to move away from bed.
