What and Why is IP Rating Important for Security and Fire Alarm Devices
IP rating, also known as International Protection Marking or Ingress Protection Marking, is an internationally recognized standard to define protection from foreign objects. For fire alarm and security devices, each part varies in their requirement according to its placement. Outdoor objects such as sirens, PIR detector often need to be water-resistant, while indoor smoke detectors are more lax.
IP Rating Classification and Relation to Fire Alarm & Security Device
The rating is defined by IP followed by 2 numerical digits, for example: IPXX
The first numerical digit defines the level of protection against solid objects such as hands, conductors, rocks. The levels are defined as below:
Level |
Description |
0 |
No protection against contact and ingress of solid objects |
1 |
Protection against hands or similar sized objects |
2 |
Protection against fingers or similar sized objects |
3 |
Protection against tools or similar sized objects |
4 |
Protection against wires, small insects or similar sized objects |
5 |
Protection against most dust |
6 |
Protection against all dust |
The second digit defines the level of protection against water, as listed below:
Level |
Description |
0 |
No protection against contact and ingress of water |
1 |
Protection against dripping water |
2 |
Protection against dripping water at an angle |
3 |
Protection against spraying water |
4 |
Protection against splashing water |
5 |
Protection against water jets |
6 |
Protection against water immersion (up to 1m) |
7 |
Protection against water immersion (more than 1m) |
Ingress Protection Requirement for Fire Alarm Siren and Smoke Detector
For outdoor siren, IP55 would suffice and protect against most natural elements such as rainwater or moisture. For fire detectors, because it is mostly placed indoor and meant for detecting smokes, IP33 or IP21 would be enough for protection.
Most of our signaling products are time tested and able to achieve a high IP rating for outdoor use. Some can even achieve waterproof for underwater use. We can offer siren and alarm products with specialized construction to meet your requirement.
