While many are still grasping onto the idea of UL 217 8th edition smoke alarm requirement for the North America market, a newer 9th edition safety standard has already been released for single station & multiple station smoke alarm in October 2022.
The main difference for 9th edition UL 217 standard are as follows:
New flaming polyurethane (PU) foam test
New smoldering polyurethane (PU) foam test
New cooking nuisance smoke test
The new requirement would combine all of the above fire & smoke characteristics and test them together, instead of separately. This means the device would contain multi-criteria sensors that can differentiate between large & small particles and respond accordingly to detect in advance & reduce false alarm.
Smoke alarm products compliant to this latest standard would ensure the consumers’ safety with the latest and advanced technologies.
The scope of this new standard does not include gas sensor, heat detector or smoke detectors that are intended to connect to a larger system.
